Welcome to the ninth Chorlton Arts Festival. As always, the Festival remains committed to bringing you the best of local entertainment over what, for the first time, will be a 10 day programme.

Chorlton Arts Festival continues to go from strength to strength, with audience figures in excess of 25,000 in 2008 and more applications this year than ever before. To produce all of this on a limited budget is a testament to the work of a dynamic festival team and I am confident that this year’s programme will not disappoint. We also continue to make it a priority that a large proportion of our programme is free of charge, enabling everyone in the local community to experience high-quality arts right on their doorstep. Within this year’s performance, visual arts and education programmes there are plenty of new things to tempt you, as you’ll see in our ‘Festival at a Glance’ section.

Thanks again to Axis Graphic Design for all their work in creating such a visually exciting programme, and to all the local venues for letting us use their space. This festival also survives and grows through the support of our outstanding team of volunteers and through the generosity of our performers and visual artists, who give their skills free of charge. Thanks must go to them especially for enabling us to provide a programme that yet again raises the profile of our local arts scene and truly reflects what a creative community exists right here in south Manchester.

I am sure that this year’s programme includes something to appeal to all tastes, and I look forward to joining you in celebrating a Festival that is truly ‘by the community, for the community’.

The Rt. Hon. Lord Keith Bradley

special focus 2009

For the past 2 years our special focus has been our visual arts programme. This year we switch our attention to our performers, as each day we feature a live band night in association with local promoterss. Launching on Thursday 14 May with Mostly Toast and Songs for the Bath Tub, we also welcome VSS Soundsystem, Blowout and Freedom Principle, amongst others. See the Festival Focus banners and enjoy some of the best sounds around
