Polar Institute bridges classical music, post-rock and modern jazz. The group features piano, cello, flute, voice, percussion and electric guitar, with each member bringing experience from a different musical background.
The music was initially inspired by composer Rob Thorpe’s experience visiting Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica. The unique landscapes of these places left a strong impression. The isolated, yet vast spaces largely untouched by humans exuded ethereal beauty whilst being haunted by lives lost exploring it. Polar Institute’s music delves into the history of antarctic exploration to document a crystalline beauty that belies a formidable and capricious force of nature.in category music
