Read all about the festival ahead of the 20th May from the perspective of Festival Volunteer, Gerard Devney…
The summer’s starting…the Pimms are being prepared…and Chorlton Arts Festival is just around the corner! If, like me, you have been waiting for an early dose of summertime fun for several gloomy months now, then the end is in sight – and what a host of events we have for you this year! Volunteering with the festival crew and chatting to friends out and about in Chorlton, the sunshine vibe has clearly caught the imagination of the community to celebrate one of the most impressive and varied arts festivals in Greater Manchester.
Among the impressive array of performances, exhibitions and collaborations that invite you to “come and have a go, if you think you’re art enough’” there are some real stand-out events that you really ‘must-see’ to get the most out of this cultural cornucopia.
One of the most exciting pieces to watch out for this year has to be The Switchover, continuing the Theatre Exterior series of productions performed in unique venues and across the Metrolink. An interactive adventure for performers and public alike, it follows the fraught adventures of Charlie as she strives for a happy ending to her hard work, while confounding bounders abound on the route to success. Definitely one for the family!
Besides this, I’ve just been beaming with joy at the spirit of the festival and how well integrated the whole festival makes the community feel. Being part of the Chorlton Players, I like to think that the public are well served by our efforts, alongside the rest of the live performance circuit that’s evident in Chorlton the year round. There’s quiz nights, rock nights, folk shows and ‘those who knows’ events taking place month on month, but Chorlton Arts Festival has to be the beating heart of it, showcasing talent and community in an inclusive celebration of art, love and life!
