Music at Lunchtime: A 20th Century Song Recital

Michaela Bloom and Ruth Gardner, popular performers at last year’s Gala Night concert, return for a very special lunchtime event. This recital features some of the most poignant song cycles of the 20th Century by Britten and Berg, contrasted with familiar Puccini operatic favourites

Playback Theatre
Playback Theatre presents improvisational storytelling in which audience members tell real-life tales and see them acted out on the spot.
Stories can be major events or the simple details of life. Playback shows the extraordinary within the ordinary and the epic within the everyday.

The Farthest Thing
An unique concert, incorporating string ensembles, laptop wizadry, layered beats and lush harmonies to create an electronica-tinged blend of folk, classical and popular music. The atmospheric setting of St Clement’s Church provides the ideal acoustic and spiritual setting in which to appreciate this one-off performance by two talented Chorlton-based musicians.

Beethoven: a selection of piano works between 1799 and 1803
A recital offering three works from the years when Beethoven first experienced hearing loss; the Rondo Op. 51 No. 2, the Sonata ‘Pathetique’ Op. 13 and the Sonata ‘The Hunt’ Op. 31 No. 3. Each piece offers an insight into the traumatic, haunting but often optimistic emotions that Beethoven was experiencing during the onset of his profound deafness.

Les Jones and Friends with Growling Fruitcake
An evening of folk songs and tunes, mostly but not exclusively traditional, played by a collection of people from Chorlton and beyond. Growling Fruitcake sings an eclectic mix of folk, country, old time and a touch of early rock and roll. Audience participation welcome.

The Golden Apple and Juel
The Golden Apple is a Manchester-based acoustic duo. Two guitars, a big drum and some tight powerful harmonies. The material ranges from haunting ballads to bawdy drinking songs. The writing is articulate and the performance is energetic, humorous and always entertaining.
Juel performs soul, alternative, dance & funk.
